Autobiografija O Drugima: A Memoir of a Literary Critic and His Time
Autobiografija O Drugima (Autobiography - About Others) is a book by Borislav MihajloviÄ Mihiz, a prominent Serbian literary critic, writer, and cultural figure. The book was first published in 1990 and consists of several chapters that cover different periods and aspects of Mihiz's life and work, as well as his observations and reflections on the literary and political scene of Yugoslavia and Serbia from the 1930s to the 1980s.
Mihiz was born in 1922 in Irig, a town in Vojvodina. He graduated from the classical gymnasium in Sremski Karlovci and the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. He worked as a director of the Museum of Vuk and Dositej, the Library of Matica Srpska, the literary critic of NIN magazine, the artistic director of Avala Film, and the artistic advisor of Atelje 212. He was also a member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and a recipient of several awards for his literary achievements.
In his book, Mihiz writes about his childhood and youth, his education and influences, his involvement in the resistance movement during World War II, his friendships and conflicts with other writers and intellectuals, his views on literature and art, his travels and experiences abroad, his participation in various cultural institutions and events, his personal and family life, and his thoughts on the social and historical changes that shaped his generation. He also portrays many famous figures that he met or knew, such as Ivo AndriÄ, MiloÅ Crnjanski, MeÅa SelimoviÄ, Branko ÄopiÄ, Danilo KiÅ, Miroslav KrleÅa, Dobrica ÄosiÄ, Josip Broz Tito, Slobodan MiloÅeviÄ, and others.
Autobiografija O Drugima is not a conventional autobiography that follows a chronological order or a strict factual accuracy. Rather, it is a subjective and creative account that blends memory and imagination, humor and irony, criticism and admiration, insight and emotion. It is a book that reveals not only the life of Mihiz, but also the life of his epoch.
One of the most distinctive features of Mihiz's book is his style of writing, which combines erudition and eloquence, wit and sarcasm, elegance and simplicity. He uses various literary devices, such as anecdotes, metaphors, paradoxes, aphorisms, and dialogues, to convey his ideas and impressions. He also experiments with different genres and forms, such as essays, sketches, letters, interviews, and reviews. He often addresses his readers directly, inviting them to share his perspective and to engage in a dialogue with him.
Another characteristic of Mihiz's book is his attitude towards his subjects and himself. He does not shy away from expressing his opinions and judgments, even if they are controversial or unpopular. He does not hesitate to praise or criticize, to admire or mock, to agree or disagree, to love or hate. He does not conceal his biases or prejudices, his passions or weaknesses, his virtues or flaws. He does not pretend to be objective or impartial, but rather admits his subjectivity and partiality. He does not claim to be authoritative or definitive, but rather acknowledges his limitations and uncertainties.
Autobiografija O Drugima is a book that challenges and provokes its readers. It is a book that offers a rich and diverse portrait of a man and his time. It is a book that reflects the personality and the spirit of its author: brilliant and original, witty and ironic, honest and courageous. a474f39169
